Twelve years ago, I walked into this shelter looking for a cat and left with Zoe — a feisty little black cat who clearly decided I was the one being adopted. She’s been curled up in my life ever since, presiding over quiet afternoons and demanding her share of every cup of tea I make (she has opinions about my routine, and they mostly involve her being in the middle of it). Black cats don’t always get picked first, but twelve years later I can tell you she was the best decision I never even had to think twice about. Here’s to the ones who wait a little longer for their person to walk through the door.
