About Us

HISTORY

In 1986, the Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) acquired an acre of land on Glenview Road in Smith’s Falls and officially became an established registered charity.  Throughout the years our mission has remained simple:

To promote the welfare of animals committed to our care, to provide shelter and care, and prevent cruelty and suffering for those animals in need through outreach and education.

As an independent no-kill shelter, LAWS does not euthanize for population control, age, breed or after a set amount of time passed. Euthanasia is reserved for those cases where animals are ill to the point that quality of life is impacted. All animals in our care will be loved and cared for until a suitable home is found.

Over the past 40 years, LAWS has served the residents and communities of Lanark County and surrounding areas. Each year LAWS takes in and finds forever homes for just over 600 cats and an average of 25 dogs.

We are located at 253 Glenview Road, Smiths Falls.

HOW WE HELP IN THE COMMUNITY

SNAP PROGRAM

Our Spay and Neuter Program (SNAP) is designed to help individuals and families in our communities with household incomes of $40,000 or less, to access affordable spay and neuter services for up to two pets per household. Last year over 100 cats and 25 dogs were spayed and neutered through our program.

More information about how to apply for the SNAP program can be found on our website at lanarkanimals.ca/snap-program

FOSTER PROGRAM

The Foster Program is an essential tool for coping with the overcrowding issues that the shelter often faces.  It is a way for kind-hearted individuals to give a shelter animal a less stressful environment, in which to heal, care for kittens/puppies and deal with behavioural issues such as separation anxiety.

Those interested in applying for the foster program should visit our website at lanarkanimals.ca/fostering
