Tell us about your pup
Emma was a puppy mill rescue and was in bad shape due to extreme neglect. LWDR took her in at 6 years of age and did a great job getting her the care she needed, which included surgeries and treatments for several infections. After her recovery, we adopted Emma in March 2019. She was very shy, afraid, and easily startled. She and I bonded immediately and became inseparable best friends. Our close relationship helped her feel safer and more secure and confident. It took quite awhile for her to come out of her shell; visits to the dog park with our other dogs helped. Emma and I do errands, shopping, car rides, and get ice cream pup cups which is her favorite, of course! She dresses up for parties, holidays, and visiting. Emma is very affectionate with me and I enjoy the attention, love, and kisses she gives me. Emma is super cute, adorable, and well behaved. Unfortunately, she had to have several more surgeries with us. Just when we thought she was doing really well and hoped she would be healthy for many years, we recently received devastating news. She was diagnosed with oral malignant melanoma, an incurable aggressive cancer. She has been my rock as I went through the deaths of my brother and father this spring and I can’t imagine life without her. We have been taking her to Iowa State University for palliative care. She’s had part of her tumor removed so it is easier for her to eat and breathe. She’s had one chemo and a cancer vaccine and more will follow after she has a week of radiation soon.
