Pet's Story or Bio
Meet Millie. Millie is one of the many contestants in theMary Ann Morris Animal Society (M.A.M.A.S.) calendar contest. We think she deserves a page on the calendar. You see, Millie has a special story. When Millie first came to MAMAS, she was extremely fearful, so she was fostered at a board member's home. However, she promptly escaped from her confinesbut never left the property. She would wander around this farm, but stayed just out of reach when her foster mom would approach. She'd bounce around happily when the car would drive up into the driveway, and come up to barely touch her foster mom's hand when it was time to eat, but never close enough to be caugh. Finally, she was lured into a dog pen to eat, and at that point, she was taken to the shelter, where she could be kept safer, and get her spayed, before the unthinkable happened. While at the vet's office for her spay surgery, Millie chewed through her leash during a potty break, and off she went. Traps were set, food set out, but she alluded all attempts to catch her. She was gone for several weeks, and it was not until she was hit by a car, and had a pelvic injury, that she was once again spotted and caught by the vet techs at the clinic. Surgery was done on her leg, but it was becoming clear that Millie may not be adoptable. To give her one last chance, we took her in as a foster from MAMAS. When she came to us she was scared, ran away when approached and kept herself almost solely confined to her kennel. With lots of patience, love, one-on-one time reassuring her she had nothing and no one here to fear, she has learned to trust again, that it's okay to be “Silly Millie”, to play and to run. She now thrives on attention as her face lights up when you call her name or pet her. She no longer runs away and is allowed to run free within the safety of our farm. She is now happy, greets us with her own BIG dance and a smile, and plays well with our other small and large fur babies. Fostering this once frightened dog has been rewarding in ways we cannot explain. Fostering saved her life and added so much joy to ours. Dogs like Millie have a difficult time thriving in a shelter environment. Their personalities, like Millie’s smile, her laugh, and her dance, remain hidden beneath the fear and distrust they often feel when confined to a shelter. Consider becoming a short or long term foster for MAMAS. It frees up space in the shelter thereby saving the lives of other adoptable dogs and it allows dogs like Millie to thrive and enjoy a happy, loving life.
