Pet's Story or Bio
Our life with Maggie (formerly Mattie) started when we saw her on petfinder.com in June 2015. We fell in love with her as soon as we saw her. We put in an application for her right away. We were on vacation with the kids about a week later when we got word that we had been chosen to be her forever family. We were so excited!

We were concerned about adopting a dog we never met, but we had heard such wonderful things about her. She had hip surgery in April and was currently recovering as the office dog for MAMAS, and they said she was extremely friendly and sweet. They were right!

Maggie was found in Jan 2015 running wild in the woods in South Carolina by a hiker. Her matted condition is what led to her shelter name. She was in bad condition: dirty, matted, fleas, ticks, heart worms, bad eye and an injured rear leg. She was all cleaned up by MAMAS staff and shortly thereafter she was spayed and they operated on her rear hip.

She started her journey from MAMAs in South Carolina on June 20th early in the morning. She arrived in Alexandria, VA around 6pm, which is where we picked her up. We were so happy to finally meet her. She is the sweetest dog you will ever meet.

Maggie loves everyone she meets and gets along great with our cats...maybe too great since the cats let her take over the box they used to love sleeping in. We have 5 kids at home and Maggie rotates from night to night sleeping on each of their beds. She loves her walks and does very well…except when she sees a squirrel. Maggie enjoys lots of attention and really loves having her tummy rubbed. She loves sleeping with stuffed animals - she not only gathers her toys but any other stuffed animals she can find around the house. We often find a collection of more than 10 toys around her bed.

She does very well at the vet and the groomer. She’s had a complete checkup and her hip is doing well (although she still limps on it from time to time) and her eye issue turned out to be a cataract which we were told is nothing to worry about at this time. Maggie is believed to be about 5 years old. We thought she was a Malti-Poo, but we did a DNA test that says she’s a Bichon Frise – Chihuahua mix. We’ve yet to see the Chihuahua in her, but who knows.

Maggie finished her first obedience class at PetsMart with flying colors. Our intent is to complete the entire series and see if she could qualify as a Service Dog so we could bring her to visit kids in hospitals or kids with special needs.

Maggie is an extraordinary dog and we are so happy to have her as part of our family!
