Beaten down by winter, Matt and I bundled up and visited the Michigan Humane Society. There we met Wendy. Recovering from heartworm, she cowered underneath a chair in her room. Matt petted her tiny head; she closed her eyes in satisfaction. He was sure.

While we filled out the paperwork, a call came over the loudspeaker: "Wendy is going to her forever home!" For an hour, staff showered Wendy with pets. I witnessed her give licks of love to those who helped her heal. I was sure.

Wendy is the sweetest, raincoat-wearing, bunny-chasing mutt I know. She’s become a neighborhood celebrity - carrying her stuffed elephant in her mouth wherever she goes. She stops and sniffs all that nature has to offer, showing us how to notice even the tiniest beauty. Having Wendy in our home teaches us that it's the unexpected encounters which change our lives for good.
