David and I have known each other since I was eight years old. We saw one another casually during summers at Mission Beach. Our mothers played bridge together and belonged to the Thursday Club.

David was six years older than I, and when I was a young teenage girl I remember catching his eye at a dance party given by mutual friends.

It wasn’t until I was at Mills College in Oakland that David, a Cal graduate, officially asked me out on a double date. But he paired me up his buddy! I think he wished he chosen me that night because the next time he called, he asked for me.

Sixty five years ago in 1949 we were married at Balboa Park at the wishing well in the Casa del Rey Moro Garden. We were the first couple to be married in the House of Hospitality after WWII. I’ll never forget it.

The secret to the success of our marriage? We always gave 110 percent. David was a very good natured man, and he always encouraged me to pursue my own interests. We had a mutual respect, and the instincts to gauge what each other needed. Throughout 54 years, four kids and busy lives, we always remained a solid couple. It was pretty simple really -- we laughed a lot and just loved each other.
