Your Pet's Rescue StoryMolly's story encompasses the love and dedication that animal rescue volunteers give to rescue animals on a daily basis.
Molly is one of a litter of newborn kittens that were born in a neighbor garage across from what we call an "urban jungle" . The owner's found them in their garage, umbilical cords still attached. They did not want to leave their garage open all night, so they left them in a basket in front of their garage door hoping mom would come for them. After a few hours, they worried they would be eaten by hawks circling overhead, and two of the 5 were missing. So they made the choice to put them in a basket in their car for the whole night- thinking they would be safe from predators. They did not realize that it was too cold and newborns would would not thrive overnight without their momma, and she would not be able to get them in a car.
The next morning they called our fellow rescue volunteer Diane. The kittens were lifeless and barely moving and mom was nowhere in sight. Diane brought them to another volunteers home: Denise who helped warm them up. It was amazing how they were able to revive them with just the warmth of their hands. Then they went to work preparing to bottle feed the newborns as fast as possible. They were having trouble getting the kittens to latch on to the bottle. They called me, I lived nearby and I went to help. Denise had to work a long shift and the three newborn kittens needed to eat every 2-3 hours, so I took them home to feed around the clock. My daughter helped me and It was exhausting. We had to help the kittens use the potty, bottle feed them, and even burp them!
Rescue Volunteers Diane and Bob were determined to go back to the neighborhood and trap the momma so that she could be reunited with and feed her babies. It took five days to finally trap her. When they brought her to my home, she immediately took care of her babies. But Diane had a feeling there were still two babies out somewhere and without their momma they would starve. She and her husband went back two nights in a row, and finally on the third night, they heard the little babies' cries. They brought the other two babies to the mom at my home just in time! All five kittens were reunited with mom and continued to eat and thrive - it was miraculous that all survived. They kittens grew up to become the sweetest and most lovable kittens to date!
Momma Emma was too feral to be domesticated and adopted. Volunteer Bob took her home to live outdoors and feeds her daily. She no longer has to hunt for her food, and will have Bob looking after her for the rest of her life.
