Your Pet's Rescue Story
Diabetic since the age of 10, Fatapus is a crazy, lovable, larger-than-life character. 18.5 years ago, he rescued me when I went to the shelter looking for a cat. He greeted me screaming and pushing his head through the bars. My Big Buddy CHOSE ME! Large and in charge from day one, there was no resisting him then, and there has been no resisting him since. He meows loudly, purrs loudly, and is impossible to ignore!
I joke that his father must have been a dog because he has never been moody, nor held a grudge. I can trim his claws, give him medicine or a bath, and he’s right back to snuggle. He hasn’t met a cat, dog, adult or child who he doesn’t like. There are no strangers in his world -EVERYONE is a friend. Fatapus has a MAGIC about him which makes EVERYONE think THEY are HIS favorite. I don’t know how a cat MAKES EVERYONE HE MEETS FEEL SPECIAL, but this guy does.
He is also an amazing office assistant. He waits for me to open that door every morning. He goes to the chair with his bed in it, and yells for me to pick him up and put him in it. Arthritis has rendered him unable to do so himself, but he and I speak each other's language:). When I hear him call, I know I need to help him get up or get down.
He is my husband's best buddy, too. He listens intently while my husband watches and debates news and politics, addressing Fatapus throughout. Fatapus even answers if you ask him a question! Somehow, the tone of his purr and inflection of his voice makes you think he understood the question and is responding accordingly.
He and I continue to rescue each other every day. He rescues me with comic relief and emotional support. And since being diagnosed with diabetes 8.5 years ago, he has received 2 shots twice a day. I don't know if most people realize that sadly, a huge number of diabetic cats are sent to kitty heaven because the condition is time consuming, and can be extremely expensive. Often their people have no other option but to send them on. So Fatapus and I are an ongoing rescue team. We are blessed to have each other. And he hasn't let diabetes get the best of him. You could never forget to give him his shots because his internal kitty alarm goes off every 12 hours - If you don’t come for him, he’s coming for you!
Like most shelter kitties, he had a rough start, and the road has had its ups and downs medically, but he remains a constant source of love, friendship and fun and HUGE PERSONALITY. A superstar in his own right, this guy belongs on a wine bottle ❤️. Let's make this happen:).
