Your Pet's Rescue Story
I had thought about fostering often. I was already volunteering at the shelter, but I wanted to do more. I was in the middle of my Kitty Cuddler shift when Susan, jokingly, asked if any of us in the cat room wanted to foster. It was kitten season and the shelter was getting full. I said I wanted to learn more and then decided to give it a try. That was when my life changed forever. I was given these two three-week old orange fur balls that had been covered in fleas.
I took them home and set them up in one of the bathrooms. I was worried about getting attached, but I continued to sit with them on my bathroom floor and give them all the attention that they deserved. Esmeralda was so sick during that time; she barley ate. I had to keep giving her medicine throughout the fostering duration. Her brother, Sawyer, was very active and always wanted to play while she just slept in my lap. She did start eating, but I had to foster them longer because it took her longer to get to the adoptable weight. As hard as I tried not to, I got attached. I loved these two little kittens. They came into my life when I was going through a really rough time. They saved me as much as I saved them.
When it was time for them to be adopted I thought that I could only keep one. I was working freelance with not much work at the time and I lived in a small apartment. I decided to adopt Esmeralda and help find a home for her brother, Sawyer. I did find Sawyer a home, but it fell through so I had to leave him at the shelter. That night was a long and horrible one. I was sad without Sawyer and so was Esmeralda. She was actually starting to pick up some of his traits like carrying his ball around the room as she cried. It was like she was lost without him and it broke my heart. We both missed him, so the next morning I drove to the shelter to get him. He had not been put on the adoption floor because there was a mistake and they had thought I was adopting him. Now it wasn't a mistake and I was taking him home.
That was a year ago. Adopting those two beautiful kittens was the best decision I have ever made. They are inseparable and they follow me around everywhere. They make everyday better and I don't know what I would do without them.
