Your Pet's Rescue Story
April 28, 2017 is the day it all began. I was flying home from a work trip and decided to peruse Instagram to pass the time. I quickly noticed a post for two kittens that were in need. They were covered in scabies and looked terrible, but I was immediately drawn in. After realizing that they were located at a facility for which I was already a foster, I got to work convincing my husband and coordinating their pick up. I went straight from the airport to the shelter to get them. Their names were Jack and Diane.

Jack and Diane settled into our home, and we started their scabies treatment. As we spent more time caring for them, it became obvious that these weren’t your average American heart land kitties. They were unique and adventurous, therefore requiring more fitting titles. Henceforth, they became known as Finn and Marceline.

Although both were playful and affectionate, we noticed an odd shape to their heads and their tendency to run into things. This led to our discovery that both were blind and likely had genetic issues. By early June, we were told that and Finn and Marceline needed to be sent to a rescue for further care. However, we were already in love and determined to see things through. With the assistance of a local rescue group, the shelter released them to us. We immediately made a visit to our personal veterinarian to determine the best route forward. Armed with the knowledge of everything that was stacked against them, we decided that these kittens needed the most love and the best life possible. On June 16, we officially adopted Finn and Marceline, and we couldn’t have been happier with our decision.

The next two months involved lots of vet visits, an excessive amount of pictures and videos, constant cuddles, and plenty of laughs as we enjoyed having two new family members. Not a person came through our door without falling in love with Finn and Marceline, and our hopes were high for their progress. Little did we know that our time would be cut so short.

August 24, 2017 was a day of heartbreak. Over the course of the night, Finn became very ill. I took him to the emergency vet around 1am. By 10am, he was gone. He succumbed to renal failure, likely a result of his genetic issues. Four days later, we lost Marceline to the same cause. We were absolutely devastated, and I questioned if I could continue caring for kittens in need.

Fast forward to the present and find that this rescue story ultimately has a happy ending. I look at this picture of Finn every day and am reminded of why we continue to foster cats and advocate for ALL animals: to give them the chance to experience the most love and the best life, regardless of time. Our hope is that their story spreads beyond us and inspires others to make a positive impact in this world.
