Your Pet's Rescue Story
My story with Marley began about 3-1/2 years ago. I had lost my 17 year old Belle to cancer and after a few months of grieving decided it was time to welcome a new four legged member to the family. I first searched online and found I thought the perfect dog, a Mastif terrier mix named Daisy. She was silly and fun and I fell in love at first sight. What about Marley? I am getting there… I began the adoption process for Daisy which included a three week foster before it could be permanent. Unfortunately, Daisy came from a very traumatized background and was very reactive. Although she and I were a perfect match, condo living did not suit her. The organization decided it was best to try and place her in a calmer environment. It was hard to lose Daisy, but then I never would have found Marley.

I only had Daisy in my home three weeks, but was broken hearted upon losing her. Before long, however, I was ready to continue the search for my fur baby. I ended up at Pet Alliance. The first dog I saw was Marley, a 1-1/2 year old lab mix, and I was immediately struck by how handsome he was. He seemed a little subdued however and so I continued to look. I searched the entire facility and narrowed it to two dogs, one of which was Marley. Marley was brought to meet me in an enclosure where, as he entered, he stepped in a water bowl startling himself 5 feet straight up into the air! My choice was made!

Within 24 hours of getting Marley home, I began to realize he was quite sick. I discovered he had pneumonia and it took two months to nurse him back to health. Once he was healthy, his personality began to shine but I noticed he was fearful of everything! He was afraid of loud sounds, steps, doors, elevators, stairs, trash bags, and the list went on. He also showed signs of separation anxiety. After time, Marley gained confidence and conquered his fears. I am so very proud of him!

About two years ago I began taking him on visits to see my aunt in assisted living. While there, I noticed he would go up to every resident in the room to say hi. That’s when a lightbulb went off and I started researching therapy dog certification. For about 1-1/2 years now Marley and I have been volunteering as a therapy dog team through Pet Alliance. We regularly visit a nursing home, as well as a VA facility and attend special events including a nursing college destress event during exams and special fund raising events. And we are about to begin visits to hospice patients. Marley is now 5 years old and has brought joy to so many people!

Marley has a very special place in my heart. I am so blessed that his journey has brought him into my life!!
