Your Pet's Rescue Story
Luna was one of a litter of 12 nearly identical yellow Lab puppies, the product of a backyard breeder in my neighborhood.
At the time Luna found me I was mourning the recent loss of my two dogs, a 15 year old Yorkie mix and 6 year old chocolate Lab. 3 months prior I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put both down within a 3 day span due to health issues. I honestly did not think I was going to survive the pain of this loss.
One day, I was driving out of my neighborhood and passed what can only be described as a cage you would see housing circus animals parked in front of an unknown neighbor’s home with a sign “Beautiful Lab Puppies!” Next thing I knew I was in the cage with 12 bumbling 4-week old puppies. All looked nearly identical save for one who had light fur on her shoulders that looked like angel wings.
11 of the 12 made their way back to their whelping. box but this one pup stayed by my side. I picked her up and asked when she was born- January 9th- the same date as my recently departed Chocolate Lab’s Birthday. I knew right then that I could never let her go.
Unfortunately, the owner of the pups thought he’d make money by breeding his 1year old Lab with a friend’s Lab. She was a young, inexperienced mother who could not feed this huge brood and it was sad to see her struggle when in the cage with them. In the end, the breeder never did make money, and although he did care for the pups, he unloaded them quickly as possible. I took possession of Luna at 7 weeks. At 4 months she was in obiedience classes and by 2 years of age was Canine Good Citizen certified.
Luna and I have volunteered as a Pet Therapy Team with Pet Alliance for nearly 3 years, her favorite job is Wagging Tails, the young reader program. She has also served as a Summer Camp Mascot for the past two years.
In her spare time, Luna enjoys anything involving swimming, camping, hiking, frisbee and catch. She also enjoys a spirited game of soccer and volleyball with her human friends.
