Your Pet's Rescue StoryOn August 2018 my 1 year old puppy died of a heart attack. My heart was shattered. I signed up to volunteer at Sanford Pet Alliance for a class assignment and had my first volunteer shift on October 2018, still grieving the loss of my puppy. When it was nearly time to open for the public, Nyla was brought out from the medical side of the shelter to the side where guests could potentially adopt her. She was heart worm positive and couldn’t take long walks or play but I tried to sell her to an older woman where Nyla dropped into our laps and rolled over for a belly rub. I talked her up and explained the heart worm process, hoping to not scare the woman off from wanting her. She left saying she would think about it. I spent the rest of the day talking her up to another gentleman and coaxing her out from the back of the kennel to meet people until she landed those bright brown eyes on me. Little did I know I was selling her to myself. I asked my husband to come meet her and she captured us when she pressed her neck against the kennel bars so we could pet her. I knew she had a tough three months ahead for her because of the heart worm treatments but we were determined to rescue her heart just like she would rescue our broken hearts. She is going to be 4 years old next month and has been heart worm free for almost 2 years.
