Amma is named after Amager, the island in Denmark. We adopted her shortly after our family spent the summer in Denmark in 2017. When we were deciding what to name her, I learned that the meaning of Amma in Old Norse is ‘the dark one’ and apparently Amma was a giantess in Nordic mythology—the dark giant, perfect for a Newfie. Then in 2023 I had the opportunity to work in Denmark, so Amma accompanied me, and this is a photo of her in Copenhagen.
