My NICU Graduate's Journey
My son, Asher, was born addicted to five different drugs, that he was exposed to while his birth mom was pregnant with him. Just a few short hours after being born he was abandoned at the hospital by his birth mom. Within days I received a call that a sweet baby boy was in need of a foster home that could possible become a forever home(officially adopted in 2021 by me) . While in the NICU Asher, gained weight and withdrew from the drugs he was exposed and addicted to. The withdrawal was hard on him. He had fevers, shakes and so many more withdraws symptoms. Prior to coming home with me, I had to go stay with Asher in the hospital and learn to care for him and with withdrawals that he would face. We would have many blood draws to make sure that due to IV drug use Asher wouldn't have any blood born pathogens. We also had many NICU after visits as well. We still have many appointments often to follow up with his issue due to withdrawal. This be life long journey.

What makes you proud of you NICU graduate?
Asher is now a healthy vibrant five year old who is excelling in kindergarten. He is in a robotics club at his school where he often teaches the older kids how to work things, as he figures them out before they even have a chance to. Asher is also involved in athletics. Asher practicpiates in t-ball in a local little league where they is his third season. Asher, also in martial arts and loves class, he is currently a yellow belt and preparing to take his next belt test. We are so thankful for the time we had in the NICU and all the special nurses, doctors and other staff that helped ensure that Asher could thrive and be the amazing young man he is today. I am so excited to announce that not only did I give Asher a temporary home but I was able to official adopt him.
