NICU Hospital for my journeyChildren’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters
My NICU Graduate's JourneyWhen I was pregnant, I found out I had Anti D and Anti C antibodies. Madelyn’s blood was not compatible with mine, so my body tried to fight her. She was born by emergency c-section for decreased fetal movement at 37.2. She was diagnosed with Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn, Pulmonary Hypertension, Cholestasis, Severe hyperbilirubinemia and Thrombocytopenia. She received 4 blood transfusions, 7 platelet transfusions and 2 cryoprecipitate transfusions. For being a term baby, she was very critical and unstable at birth, and her prognosis was unknown given the rarity of her condition.
What makes you proud of you NICU graduate?Madelyn has defied all the odds. The Neonatologist that delivered her couldn’t believe how far she’s come. She even told me “I wasn’t sure she was gonna make it”. Madelyn is now developmentally ahead of schedule. She is a strong, feisty, independent, sassy girl and we couldn’t be prouder.
