My NICU Graduate's Journey
Aasiah spent 338 days in the NICU, He was born at 23 weeks, weighing 1lb 2.5oz. He was given less than 10% chance of survival, but he defeated all odds ever since the day he was born!
He was born at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, from there he was transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He then was transferred to Mott children’s hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan where he finished out his NICU journey. It was truly a challenging journey for the first 6 months of life for him.
A little of his story:
He had to be resuscitated in his first few weeks of life (he was down very low on oxygen and had an extremely low heart rate for almost an hour, had to get chest compressions for an hour, and the Epi 10 times), had to get his right lung manually opened up by the doctor, he was on 4 different ventilators at the same time at one point, had so many issues and diagnosis such as: severe BPD, severe ROP, Epilepsy, heart calcification, NEC, pulmonary hypertension, intestinal perforations, had 2 chest tubes, had 2 abdominal drains, had multiple blood transfusions, collapsed lungs, PVL, pericardial effusion, chronic lung disease, stage 4 kidney disease, AKI, failed multiple extubations, and the list just goes on! Truly my miracle baby! He is over 19lbs now and thriving!

What makes you proud of your NICU graduate?
What makes me proud is knowing I have such a strong and resilient baby. Before I got pregnant with him, my husband and I decided this would be our last baby. Although my pregnancy, labor, and birth did not go how I wanted it to for my last pregnancy. I am still grateful for the journey. It taught me so much and showed me how amazing these tiny fighters are. I feel so honored to be a mother to a tiny fighter. My son truly showed me that nothing is impossible.
