My NICU Graduate's JourneyPaxton and Weston were born at 32 weeks. Paxton spent 1 month in the NICU, while Weston spent 2 months in the NICU. Our journey felt like an emotional roller coaster. It was always one step forward and two steps back. It was extremely hard watching them progress on different timelines. Both twins needed oxygen support, feedings tubes, caffeine, and around the clock monitoring.
The hardest challenge for us was taking home one twin without the other and balance life between home and the NICU. It felt like our hearts were in two different places. We were not allowed to bring Paxton back to the NICU when we visited Weston.
Weston was struggling with pulmonary hypertension and just needed some extra time for his lungs to catch up. With time and oxygen support he was eventually able to outgrow.
After two very long months our twins boys were together again and our family was complete.
What makes you proud of your NICU graduate? We are so proud at how hard our boys fought every single day in the NICU. After they got home, they still had work to do to catch up. They say it takes up to 2 years for premie babies to catch up. They have worked hard at PT every week to get stronger and they have KILLED IT! Weston still is working hard at speech and gets better everyday. We are so proud of our 3 lb little premies who are about to turn 2 and are now in the 75th percentile and stronger then ever!!!!!
