NICU Hospital for my journeyWolfsons Children’s Hospital Downtown
My NICU Graduate's JourneyAt our 20 week anatomy scan, we discovered that our twin B, Ocean, had two placentas and was originally classified with marginal cord insertion. Two weeks later they deemed the cord insertion was just a little over 2 cm from the edge so we weren’t as in danger of IUGR. I made it to 37.5 weeks with both babies. When it was time for Ocean to come out after her brother Coast, it was silent. They eventually got her crying but it was weak and short lasting. She was turning blue and they started setting up to take her immediately to the NICU for respiratory distress. Having our sweet girl separated and whisked away was so heart breaking. It would be 23 hours until I got to meet her in the NICU. Walking down the looming hallway I could hear a little quiet cry, crying out from a room down the hall and I knew it was my baby girl. The amount of wires, tubes and sounds in that room was so much to take in and process. From the cpap and ng-tube to a nasal cannula at full blast, to latching for the first time, she worked so hard to heal her body and grow. My wife and I were separated because we didn’t want her sleeping alone, being alone. 5 days later our sweet girl was breathing on her own and passed to be able to come home and join her twin and family. So proud.
What makes you proud of your NICU graduate?Seeing all of the obstacles she overcame, and seeing how strong and healthy she is now. Even now having weekly PT and OT therapy appointments she is hitting goals and working hard to overcome anything that gets in her way of progress and development.
