NICU Hospital for my journeyMiami Valley Hospital
My NICU Graduate's JourneyWhen Hudson was born we immediately knew something was wrong as he was purple and limp. The doctors and nurses eventually got him to cry and he seemed to be ok although his apgar was low. Shortly after we got results from his cord blood that his blood gases were high. He was whisked away to the NICU and quickly put on cooling protocol. This would bring his body temperature down to 92 degrees for 72 hours in an attempt to repair damage done to his brain while he was without oxygen at birth. The prognosis they gave us wasnt great and we were told it would be a long road. After 72 hours of cooling where we were unable to touch Hudson or do anything to get his temperature raised, they finally warmed him back up. He quickly became stable and was even able to nurse for the first time just 12 hours later. Next came the scary dreaded scans to see the damage on his brain. By some miracle they came back completely clear. We were able to get his vitals stable and him nursing enough to come home on day 6. Despite having a VSD as well, Hudson is 10 months old today and thriving. He is the most perfect, active, smart, and happy baby and you would never know his start to life was so tough.
What makes you proud of your NICU graduate?I am proud of Hudson for defeating all the odds set against him. Not only has he thrived but has hit milestones before the age he should be hitting them.
