My NICU Graduate's JourneyJordan was born at 35 weeks and 5 days following PPROM. In doing so, he followed closely in his big sister’s footsteps, as she was also born early at 34 weeks and 5 days due to the same condition.
While Jordan's first hour of life was uneventful, nurses soon noticed him making grunting sounds. This led to a diagnosis of Respiratory Distress Syndrome and a 30 day stay in the NICU. He spent seven of those days on a ventilator, but he proved to be an absolute champ, meeting every challenge and slowly getting off the breathing support as he grew stronger.
Today, Jordan is a thriving 2 and a half year old boy who is constantly on the move and cannot be stopped. Looking at him now, it is hard to believe he had such a difficult start.
What makes you proud of your NICU graduate? What makes me most proud of Jordan is the incredible resilience he showed from his very first breath. Watching him struggle and seeing him hooked up to all sorts of machines for those first 30 days was easily the hardest test I have ever faced as a mother. Yet, he met that challenge with a strength that was far bigger than he was. Seeing him come through that difficult beginning to become the growing, happy boy he is today, full of endless energy, is a constant reminder of how far he has come.
