My NICU Graduate's JourneyAs a 43 year old I was placed on bed rest at 28 weeks with pre-eclampsia. After fertility treatments and adopting our son in 2000 Elizabeth is a true Miracle baby! I was given Surfactant to ensure she developed strong lungs. She was born via C-section at 31 weeks. She weighed 2lbs 9 ounces and was 15 inches long.
The incubator kept her warm, she leaned how to suck and swallow breast milk with much practice. We left the NICU team a tape with our voices singing songs and reading stories. We visited daily and engaged in Kangaroo Cuddle. She was discharged after 30 days weighing 3lbs 14 ounces.
Elizabeth stayed home for the first 4 months.
She had an infant teacher through Regional Center and an Occupational Therapist. Elizabeth continued to gain weight and reach all developmental milestones.
What makes you proud of your NICU graduate?Elizabeth persevered from preschool to college graduation by working diligently with Math and Reading tutors. She is a true leader, has a strong Faith, is an amazing friend to many and cherishes her family and pet cat named Toby. She is excited to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education.
