NICU Hospital for my journey
Inova Fairfax Children's Hospital

My NICU Graduate's Journey
From a tiny fighter in the NICU to a powerhouse on the soccer field, my son’s journey is a breathtaking testament to resilience. Born at just 2 lbs. 14 oz., he began his life facing a mountain of medical obstacles, including a hole in his heart and a grueling 96-day stay at Inova Fairfax Hospital. With the odds stacked against him, he spent his earliest days proving that strength isn't measured in size.

Today, those early struggles have been replaced by the focused energy of an athlete. Navigating the world with autism, he has developed a unique perspective and an unbreakable spirit. As a soccer goalie, he stands as the last line of defense—a fitting role for a boy who has been defying the odds since birth. His recent transition from recreational play to trying out for the travel team highlights his determination to constantly push boundaries.

Beyond the goalposts, he is a true explorer who finds joy in riding his bike and discovering the beauty of the outdoors. He approaches life with a massive heart, giving and receiving love without reservation. He is more than just a survivor of a difficult start; he is a vibrant, active, and deeply loved boy who serves as a daily reminder that miracles are real. He is truly my greatest blessing—a small hero who grew into a champion.

What makes you proud of your NICU graduate?
I would be proud of him because he is the living definition of perseverance. To go from a fragile 2 lbs. 14 oz. in a hospital bed to a fearless goalie guarding a soccer net is nothing short of incredible. He didn't just survive the "odds against him"—he outran them.

I am proud of the way he navigates the world with autism, turning what others might see as a challenge into the focus and determination required to try out for a travel team. Whether he’s pedaling his bike or exploring the outdoors, he shows me every day that his spirit was never limited by his start. Most of all, I am proud of his heart; despite everything he has been through, he remains a source of pure love and the greatest blessing in my life.
