These two rescue mamas have become the very best of friends. Ginger (white) is a breeder surrender and my second foster dog, was adopted by my neighbor Charlie. Sadie (red), my fourth foster, came from a rural shelter where she had been surrendered with her nine puppies — and she quickly became our “foster failure.”

Though their beginnings were difficult, both dogs have embraced their new lives filled with love, toys, tennis balls, and weekly playdates. Watching them wrestle, chase each other, and simply enjoy being dogs has brought us endless joy.

There’s something especially meaningful about seeing two former mama dogs — who spent so much of their lives raising puppies — finally getting the chance to play carefree together. Their friendship is a beautiful reminder of how rescue can transform not just one life, but many.
