Rio (Sam25) was rescued by Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue in July 2025. We welcomed him into our home as a foster in September, and by December he had become our “foster fail”—we couldn’t imagine life without him.

Rio and his brother had been abandoned in a backyard, and it took about six months for Rio to recover from heartworm and other health challenges. As his body healed, so did his confidence.

At first, Rio was shy and anxious around other dogs. We enrolled him at Green Beagle Lodge a few days each week. There he discovered the joy of playing with other dogs, learned to swim, and blossomed into a much more confident dog. This photo captures Rio relaxing by the pool after a day of fun.

Rio’s journey is a wonderful reminder of what love, patience, and consistent care can accomplish. With time and encouragement, a timid, uncertain dog has become a happy, confident companion, showing just how resilient rescue dogs can be.
