Feral pigeons commonly suffer terribly from something called stringfoot. Often they lose toes and even whole feet. Even if they don't, they suffer pain. Pigeons in the city get their toes caught in the detritus of our human garbage - even things we might not think of - like human hair. They can't remove it, the hair or string tightens over time, gets embedded in the skin, and cuts off circulation. It's a skill to catch a pigeon to de-string, but it is very rewarding.
