It was only thanks to her incredible fighting spirit that we found Chihi (left, next to her mate Fluffy) being stuck on a tree, her legs tied. It was scorching outside and some neighbors said she had been there for half a day. Yet she kept flapping her wings trying to escape, eventually getting our attention. Her spirit moved us deeply from that very first moment, and she quickly showed us we were meant to be family. Thanks to her, we went from hardly ever interacting with animals to becoming obsessed with learning about their behavior, spending hundreds of hours each year helping out bird-related causes, and meeting so many incredible, like-minded people in the process. Chihi was so little, but she made our lives so full.
