About Us

National Mill Dog Rescue is a non-salaried 501c3 non-profit charity registered with the International Revenue Service.

Our Mission:
To rescue, rehabilitate and rehome discarded breeding dogs and to educate the general public about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry.

Located in Peyton, CO, National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) was established in February 2007 in honor of a resilient and forgiving Italian Greyhound named Lily. Rescued from a dog auction in Missouri by Theresa Strader, NMDR’s Founder and Executive Director, Lily had spent the first seven years of her life as a commercial breeding dog, or "puppy mill mom." Determined to ensure that Lily’s years of suffering would not be in vain, Strader founded NMDR to give a voice to mill dogs across the country.

Seventeen years later, NMDR has saved over 20,000 dogs and continues to welcome 200 to 300 new dogs to freedom each month. These rescues receive comprehensive rehabilitation through our enrichment, behavior, and veterinary programs. Our commitment is to find each rescue a loving forever home where they will be treated as cherished family members—just as they deserve.
