When Lola’s Pet Rescue called about a German Shepherd from the Four Corners area, they had one clear message: he was just too big. At over 100 pounds, Max’s size—and his breed—had made him invisible to potential adopters. But we saw something special. We agreed to foster him, and the moment we admitted we had no intention of ever taking him to an adoption event, it was official—Max was home.

Since then, Max has conquered his fear of stairs and learned to love car rides. Today, he’s living large—literally. Everything about Max is big: big hikes, big cuddles, and the biggest dog bed you’ve ever seen. He’s goofy, gentle, endlessly affectionate, and we feel incredibly lucky that he chose us as his people.

How would your pet spend a summer afternoon?
A perfect summer afternoon for Max starts above the tree line in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where the air is thin and the trails are steep—just the way he likes them. With his dad by his side, Max bounds over rocks and snow patches, ears perked, tail high, soaking in every alpine scent and breeze.

After the hike, they head down the mountain to meet Mom and Princess—Max’s sister and partner in crime—at a local brewery. Max finds the shadiest spot under the picnic table, stretches out his big frame, and accepts head scratches from friendly strangers who can’t help but admire his size and soulful eyes.

He sips water from a collapsible bowl, watches the world go by, and sneaks the occasional french fry from Mom. With a belly full of snacks and a heart full of joy, Max knows he’s right where he belongs: mountains, family, sunshine, and love.

That’s Max’s kind of afternoon—big, bold, and full of heart.
