For the Walters of the world!

Eight months ago, Walter came in to Saint Paul Animal Control. He was labeled an urgent and "likely hospice" cat. This senior boy was severely underweight and had a large mass on his face.

Pet Haven said YES because of programs like our Rainbow Fund and Phoenix Fund that help provide the support for hospice and special needs animals.

When he arrived at his foster home, Walter was lethargic, disinterested, and depressed. He was so thin that even cat beds were uncomfortable for him.

We were excited when Walter's first vet visit warranted some optimism. He was underweight due to hyperthyroidism and his tumor was almost certainly benign. Hyperthyroidism is easily treatable with a cheap and accessible medication, and he could live with his tumor.

For the next few months, he voraciously devoured kitten food, was given many paper towel "baths" to help keep his oozing mass clean, and had his thyroid levels tested a few times so his veterinarian could hone in on just the right dosage of medication.

Slowly but surely, Walter gained not only weight, but comfort, interest in life, his goofy personality back, and even the desire to play every now and then. He went from eating six times a day (and often vomiting) to eating three times a day. His thyroid levels stabilized and tests even showed that his kidneys were functioning pretty well. For an older cat, this was great news!

Walter was doing so well in fact that last month, he was cleared for surgery to have his tumor removed and get some dental work done. Another pleasant surprise was in store - his teeth looked pretty good for a 15-year-old! The wonderful team at Parkview Cat Clinic also gave him the grooming of his life while under anesthesia, removing some tough mats and dirt.

Walter has recovered beautifully after surgery and constantly asks for pets on his left cheek where his mass used to be. After gaining an amazing five pounds, he is now able to live a peaceful and comfortable life as a senior kitty - spending the vast majority of his time stretched out and smiling to himself on his favorite bed in the sunshine.
