About

For over four decades, Preservation Connecticut, formerly known as Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, has been protecting the places that matter to the people of Connecticut. A nonprofit organization, established by a special act of the State Legislature in 1975, we preserve, protect and promote the buildings, sites and landscapes that are a beloved part of our heritage and a vital part of our future.

Every day, we're investing in our communities, supporting our neighbors' urgent preservation efforts, educating building owners and lobbying for more preservation-friendly policies. We're giving industrial buildings new life as restaurants, work and living spaces filled with unique character. We're creating downtown hubs that draw longtime locals and new tourists and making places that people can afford and want to live. And, we're building inspiring spaces for entrepreneurs to work, while restoring working farms to double as event spaces.

In the face of increasing development and environmental pressures, we're keeping preservation front and center.

+ WE'RE FIGHTING TO SOLVE PRESERVATION CHALLENGES ACROSS OUR STATE.
Last year, our field-based Circuit Riders gave on-site assistance for over 250 projects across 87 communities, supporting historical societies, property owners, developers and elected officials. We help find the best ways to repair, rehabilitate and reuse the places they care about, saving them from the wrecking ball and preserving them for a second life.

+ WE'RE FIGHTING FOR GOOD PRESERVATION POLICY.
We've defended the state historic tax credit, protected public lands, and expanded the model ordinance for local preservation. All this creates an environment that's good for sustainable growth. We also fought for The Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program, making adaptive re-use economically feasible and transforming large scale buildings and downtowns.

+ WE'RE FIGHTING SO EVERYONE'S VOICE CAN BE HEARD.
Our neighbors know best what places and spaces are important to them. So, we provide the guidance, tools and training to make their voices louder – championing our state's buildings, streetscapes, industrial mills and rural barns, while building partnerships with other neighbors who care.

+ WE'RE FIGHTING FOR THE PEOPLE WORKING HARD FOR OUR FUTURE.
We bring neighbors, universities, local preservation organizations, development stakeholders and other experts together to learn from one another and to make connections. By offering grants, awards and internships, we give education and critical funds for community planning, maintenance, repairs, architectural design and engineering studies.

+ WE OFFER EXCITING EVENTS AND INSPIRING CONTENT.
We host open house talks in partnership with local realtors, owners and heritage organizations to talk about the value of historic places and imagine their future. We share exciting ideas from the worlds of art, architecture, culture, eco-friendly and sustainable innovation and communities of the future.

+ WE KEEP OUR PRESERVATION HEROES AND HISTORIC PLACES IN THE SPOTLIGHT.
Every year, we award preservation heroes working tirelessly to bring new life to older places. And, for over a decade, our historians and building specialists have documented and promoted awareness of historic buildings, barns, mills and industrial sites, early town greens and local historic districts.
