Rescue Story
My friends & family couldn't understand why I wanted to adopt an eyeless pug and take on the additional responsibility that comes with a special needs pug. I tried to explain that it would actually mean less responsibility for me. You see, I would never have to give Patch regular eye drops or get him ointment when he inevitably came down with an eye infection. No eyes, no problem! I already watch my pugs like a hawk when we're on walks and, unlike my previous rescue pug Clyde, I wouldn't have to worry about Patch damaging his eyes if he somehow managed to walk into a bush or something.
And what an amazing and inspiring pug Patch is. His first weekend home with me and he already figured out the rough layout of the house. He only cried for me a handful of times when he couldn’t figure out how to get out of a room. On our very first walk together, Patch took off trotting down the unfamiliar street in an unfamiliar neighborhood trusting his connection to me via the leash. He walks–and even runs–outside with such confidence, trusting in me always to warn him of obstacles and keep him out of danger (even after I accidentally let him walk into the occasional mailbox or stop sign). The absence of eyeballs does not slow this pug down, not even for a second! Following that first walk on our first day together, we sealed our bond with an afternoon nap during which he snuggled next to me for hours (and probably passed gas on me for hours as well).
Patch is proof that you don't need eyeballs to make those super cute facial expressions that pugs are known for. He has very expressive eyebrows and can still move the muscles around where his eyes once were. When I look at his irresistibly adorable face, I don't even notice the lack of eyes. All I see is wrinkles for days! I am pretty much obsessed with this pug (and I'm pretty sure he feels the same way about me). I think we can all agree that life's better with a pug. I just can't believe how lucky I am that Patch is my pug.
