Days after losing my 16-year-old cat in 2023, I adopted Billie Jean, a blind, sweet, Shiba-ish mutt, from Humane Colorado on Christmas Eve. But later that evening, panic hit. I realized I wasn’t the person she deserved, not yet. I wasn’t ready to care for another life. So, the day after Christmas, I returned her with heartbreak and honesty. When I told my therapist, she paused, “Wait… Billie Jean?” She told me she’d also been hoping to adopt her, but thought she’d missed the chance. I told her everything I loved about Billie Jean, and soon after, she adopted her. Renamed Sugaree, she’s now thriving.

I love you more than life itself, little Sugaree. You were named after one of my musical heroes, Jerry Garcia — and just like him, you bring light, love, and spirit into the world. You’re gentle, accepting, and yes… a little bit stubborn — but in the best way. Mommy loves you more than words can say.
