A little about me...About 9 years ago, Martha’s owner and my friend Michael, was contacted by a friend about a dog he found. Her name at the time was Cinnamon, and she was the product of a backyard breeder - the breeder didn't want her or couldn't sell her - so he left her tied to a pole for most of her young life. When Michael met her she was flea bitten with an ear infection, and severely malnourished. Michael decided to take her in and nurse her back to health - she became a foster thanks to HEART Animal Rescue and was renamed Martha Stewart Washington. There was a lot of interest, but ultimately Michael realized Martha was his dog now.
With Martha as inspiration, Michael became heavily involved in the dog training world and was able to train Martha so well she became a well-loved therapy dog. They enjoyed visiting nursing homes together, as well as going for hikes, swimming, the dog park, you name it. They did everything together.
In July 2019 Michael had a massive stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side of his body. Unfortunately this left him in a situation where he was not able to take care of Martha anymore. I became her "temporary" foster for which I thought would only be a few week period during his recovery.
Martha has now been with me for almost 3 years and she misses Michael a lot and gets to see him often. He's now getting more intensive treatment in a facility down state, and we are all very hopeful that someday soon he'll be rehabilitated enough to be reunited with his dog permanently.
Until then my husband and I have committed to giving her the best life possible. Martha LOVES people, so we try to get her out into the world as much as possible. She definitely enjoys sleeping and watching the world pass by outside our windows. She loves being with her brother Scotch, as well as my two dogs Lily and Lola.
