Maizy’s Story: Healing One Step at a Time

When I first met Maizy, she had just been rescued from the berry fields by the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter. She was out there alone, trying to survive with two tiny puppies clinging to her for safety. No shelter. No steady food source. Just a mother doing everything she could to protect her babies—from the elements, the noise, the fear, and from whatever had already hurt her.

I don’t know everything she endured, but I know enough to understand how much she needed healing—and love.

When Maizy came to me, she was completely on edge. Hyper-alert. Heartbreaking to witness. Fireworks would send her trembling. Loud noises, sudden movements, other dogs—everything was a potential threat. And yet, behind her wary eyes, I could see a gentle, intelligent soul simply trying to feel safe again.

Maizy isn’t aggressive. She’s affectionate, eager to learn, and she makes me laugh every single day. She just needed someone willing to move at her pace—and not give up on her.

Her story is still unfolding. But it’s already one of resilience, of trust, and of unconditional love. Love that she receives—but even more so, love that I receive from her.
