Mickey was far more than Mommy’s first special needs rescue—he became the heart, inspiration, and founding spirit of the Padded Bum Crew. Born on February 11, 2012, Mickey entered the world facing extraordinary challenges. Rescued through the efforts of Southern California Bulldog Rescue and a dedicated team of advocates, including his foster parents Lisa and John, he was saved from a neglectful breeding situation that left him with urine burns and significant physical deformities.
Mickey was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, a congenital spinal defect that caused incontinence and left his back legs fused and hyper-extended. Despite having no prior experience caring for a special needs dog, Mommy felt an undeniable connection to him and brought him home on June 30, 2012. That decision would change both of their lives forever.
From puppyhood, Mickey approached every challenge with courage and determination. Through a year of careful therapy and support, he developed incredible upper-body strength. When he received his first wheelchair from Eddie’s Wheels at one year old, he embraced life at full speed, becoming a fast, fearless, and joyful ambassador for special needs pets. Whether racing around in his cart or keeping everyone entertained with his mischievous habit of swallowing socks and other forbidden treasures, Mickey lived every day with enthusiasm and resilience.
Most importantly, Mickey transformed perceptions of disability. He never saw himself as limited, and he taught everyone around him to do the same. Through social media, his story helped educate thousands about the care, capabilities, and happiness of special needs animals. As new members joined the Padded Bum Crew, Mickey became their patient mentor and loving big brother, showing them how to thrive.
Through Southern California Bulldog Rescue, Mickey was given a second chance. In return, he gave the world a powerful lesson: differences are not limitations—they are strengths. His legacy continues as a symbol of hope, resilience, and unconditional
