Pet's QuirksThey loved mock fighting and racing against each other.
Pet's StoryBuck aka Beau came into my life through a military surrender after his previous owner was deployed. This beautiful tri-colored shepherd mix derived his name from the fictional animal character in Jack London’s Book, The Call of the Wild. Like the character, he did have a somewhat wild and wolf-like appearance to earn that name.
He was kenneled at the Escondido Humane Society for a week until I saw his big brown expressive eyes with his striking white blaze on his face. I fell in love with him and renamed him, “Beau,’” because of his handsome looks. Per his previous owner's profile, he had a history of being dog aggressive, indifference to other animals, not playful, disliking confinement or loneliness, but happy in a garage. Regardless, I would not be deterred and adopted Beau, at 4.5-year-old on August 2, 2013.
I worked diligently and patiently to rehabilitate his anxiety and aggression towards other dogs. We went on walks, hikes, and interacted with some calm and friendly dogs. Beau’s anxiety gradually dissipated, and he grew into a confident and balanced dog. Eventually, I took him to visit the South Buena Vista Dog Park and later we volunteered with New Step Service Dogs for approximately two years. Beau became my temperament tester for recruiting dogs at the local shelters to be service dogs for military veterans. This relationship created a synergistic effect: I rescued Beau then he in turn rescued other dogs from the local shelters.
On January 30, 2015, our family expanded to include an adorable Smooth Coated Collie Mix, 5-month-old puppy from the San Diego Humane Society. I named the new canine addition Tavon, because he loved the outdoors and was a unique sweet dog. He grew up to be a gentle giant and was an excellent companion for Beau. Tavon brought joy to children, especially when they thought he was a giant “Snoopy” from the Peanuts cartoon.
Beau became his mentor while Tavon taught Beau how to play. Being opposite in looks and temperament, one was somewhat aloof, serious while the other was a social goofball. My Yin and Yang pair balanced each other out well. I took them on outdoor excursions at various parks and hiking trails throughout San Diego County and the Los Angeles area.
On March 22, 2019, I took them to see the famous poppy bloom at Lake Elsinore. All the people on the trail cleared a path for us. My dogs were rock stars that day with their paparazzi. Several people requested to take pictures with Beau and Tavon at their side. My boys didn't give out their usual pawprint autographs that day.
Four years later, Tavon sadly visited the Rainbow Bridge on May 13, 2023. Beau followed him on 6/30/2024. They will be a dynamic force together in heaven. May they unite and frolic around at the meadows in heaven. They will be missed and will be forever in my heart. It was an honor to have these loving, loyal, intelligent, and wonderful companions in my life. In memory of them, please donate to support all the animals. Thank you so much for your generosity!
