Pet's Story or Bio
Stasy Yana, a smoky black-and-white Siberian Husky, is a survivor. Since October this sweet, inspirational, two-year-old pup lost a front leg due to an untreated wound on her paw…then, in June, survived emergency surgery to remove a football-sized cancerous tumor from her tummy.
But Stasy’s prognosis for a long, happy life with her new mama, looks pretty darn great!
In October, Stasy ran away from an abusive home.
The SPCA of Monterey County’s vet determined an injury to her paw had gone untreated. Because it hurt, the Husky favored that front leg. With time, the muscles atrophied. So, after the SPCA rescued her and a splint didn’t help, the vet decided she couldn’t save the leg.
But this playful, now tri-pawed pup never misses a beat. Even when she stumbles—landing hard on her face—Stasy gamely picks herself up, shakes and ambles on.
But, as if losing a leg at the tender age of two wasn’t enough? In June, X-rays for a suspected intestinal blockage revealed a huge tumor on Stasy’s liver. A team of veterinary surgeons and nurses at Monterey’s Blue Pearl Emergency Vet Hospital removed the malignant mass.
Fortunately the surgeons’ were able to cleanly get the four-pound tumor out, while leaving a viable liver lobe to regenerate.
Even still, Stasy’s prognosis wasn’t good. But a UC Davis veterinary biopsy analysis— in consultation with vet oncologist Theresa Arteaga in Monterey—determined Stasy’s cancer actually was a type rarely found in such a young dog. And this unusual cancer is not one to usually metastasize, as first was feared.
Now recovering, Stasy is thriving in her new owner’s care. As her bountiful fur grows back from surgery, Stasy (which means resurrected in Russian) is making the most of this—her second—new lease on life. Woofing and woofing whenever she wants a treat—or attention—the willful, mischievous and stubborn Husky pup playfully bounds about her Pebble Beach home. And Stasy sticks to her new mama like glue; summoning her with a sharp bark from across the house to come cuddle.
However, Stasy’s mission in life is to “bury” her stuffed toys in the backyard landscaping mulch.
With intensity of purpose, Stasy seeks the perfect spot to lay each bear, wolf, lamb or other new fabric friend to rest.
She then digs a comfy bed with her single front paw, drops the toy from her mouth, positions it with her nose, and snouts mulch over and around it. This ritual easily takes Stasy 20 minutes. Then she dashes proudly inside with telltale dirt on her nose.
And…Stasy ALWAYS carefully leaves each toy’s head exposed.
Why would that be?
Well, Stasy, of course, wants her stuffed friends 🧸 to be able to breathe!
