I rescued Butter and two kittens from a rural farm where cats were left to breed and interbreed. She was only about a year and a half old and she'd had two litters already. I brought the kitties home and promptly had them spayed. Buttercup was such a funny, quirky little mama; she lived happily with me for 15 years.
