A little about me...
I adopted Caesar at 3 years old from the Bellevue Humane Society after his elderly Mom passed. He had been adopted and returned once immediately following her passing because he wasn’t a good fit for his new Dad. When the worker let Caesar out of his kennel for us to meet, she gave me a ball for interaction and escorted us to an enclosed area. Before I could throw the ball he immediately jumped onto my lap and started kissing my face. He was mine.
I discovered that Caesar was basically a lap dog without socialization for dogs or humans. Therefore, I enrolled us in training at PetSmart. He was the smallest of all the dogs in class, and needless to say, the only one the trainer had to repeatedly take out to the hallway for timeout. But he was also the cutest! As our new life together began, you can imagine there were aggressive challenges and tears, but determination and consistency. A friend lent me Cesar Milan’s book for further training us which was very helpful as an adoptive parent. All my previous dogs had been raised and trained as puppies.
Gradually, I also introduced Caesar and my two adopted cats. After 3 months behind the stairwell gate, they became further acquainted and the order of the animal kingdom was established. Let’s just say, my cats won his respect and love. He missed his little sisters who we tearfully said goodbye to a couple years ago within 2 months of each other. I’m extremely grateful for my wonderful Banfield vet!!
After 11 years together, I’m a better pack leader and Caesar’s a happy boy, still with much energy, even with a little arthritic limp as my boy ages.
Yes, he still pulls on the leash and barks when he sees another dog, but not all dogs can learn new tricks. Some just need the unconditional consistent love and loyalty they freely offer us!
