Brennivin (a.k.a. “Old Lady”) is a legendary upstairs cryptid, part retired aristocrat and part chain-smoking lounge singer trapped in cat form. At nearly sixteen years old, she rules her territory from elaborate blanket forts and cushioned thrones, summoning her chosen human with a gravelly squawk that sounds less like a meow and more like someone who has seen things. After taking over a year to grant lap privileges, she now expects immediate seating arrangements upon arrival and remains unimpressed by the quality of household service. The younger cats are tolerated only as distant downstairs peasants. Despite her regal standards and permanent expression of disappointment, Brennivin still transforms into a kitten at the sight of a laser pointer, launching into pursuit with astonishing enthusiasm. Once “missing” for an entire day, she was eventually discovered asleep under the covers, blissfully unaware of the investigation she had inspired.
