Visitors and volunteers are always welcome at our humane society which serves southwest Nebraska and northwest Kansas. And when you stop by in to see us you will be greeted by a loyal tabby, our “official shelter cat Lionel.”

Lionel spends much of his day sleeping on the McCook Humane Society counter monitoring our sign-in shelter guest book. During shelter hours he loves when visitors come in and gives him a few minutes of attention. Lionel was brought in one day as a stray cat and with no owners, no home, we adopted him to stay on to represent the shelter with the public and our staff.

For many years Lionel had a partner named Jackson. The two of them had their own room at the shelter and lived the good life, like royalty as "Kings of the Shelter."
