I am a Therapy Animal

Tell us a story about how pet therapy touched your life.
I currently have two therapy dogs. Both are an integral part of my special needs classroom. I've seen hundreds of success stories involving my students and their interactions with both dogs. There is a beautiful connection between kids and animals. Emma's sweet, courageous spirit draws both kids and adults to her.

Give us an example of a special interaction between your therapy animal and the person they were visiting.
I have seen so many touching moments showcasing the bond between my dogs and my students. Often students with reading or speech deficits are reluctant to read aloud, but they eagerly sit with Emma in a quiet corner and read a book. When a student is having a rough day, my team is called upon for some soothing therapy. Just a few minutes later, anxious behaviors are replaced with calm by petting and loving on Emma. Partially paralyzed, Emma has taught the kids at my school about compassion and acceptance of those who are different. My therapy dogs have achieved Rock Star status! Last fall Emma ran for President of my Humane Society Club and won by a landslide! I am grateful to have the opportunity to connect children with dogs every day as I teach. I witness human -animal connections that are nothing short of magical.
