THE SECRET LIFE OF MONKEY BUSINESS : I Am Part Chimpanzee!
I know what you are thinking. A Monkey is not a Chimpanzee. You are correct. “Monkey Business” is the name Animal Farm Foundation gave to me when I arrived at their shelter and I kept it after being adopted because it fits me. It is just one of those funny coincidences. Now that I have that clarified, let me share with you my secret mixed breed origins — I am part chimpanzee.
Most of you would call me a “pit bull” dog, sure sure, I guess I look like a “pit bull”. Who doesn’t these days right? But here’s the thing, if you were to observe my behavior and look at me as an individual you might notice that I am part chimpanzee. But I am getting ahead of myself. First let me explain how I know so much about chimpanzees. I have seven close chimp friends who were rescued from a bio medical laboratory and given a second chance to live out the rest of their lives at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in Cle Elum, WA. (I am sure you see why this interests me since I too was given a second chance.) By following my chimp friends lives I noticed so many similarities in our behavior I couldn’t ignore it!
• FORAGING : I Love to forage in my back yard and I can find a walnut, hidden by those crazy squirrels, in one sniff of the breeze after I walk out my door. I also love to forage for evergreen branches to chew on as well as rabbit droppings (yummy!).
• GROOMING : I may not have opposable thumbs but I love to groom and be groomed. Since I don’t have opposable thumbs I choose to lick and lick and lick and lick. This makes me feel secure, reassured, content, and part of my family.
• NESTING : I build nests to sleep in just like chimps! I never go to sleep without gathering my blankets, nudging and digging them until everything is just so. Then I circle a few times, dig a little bit more, lie down, and nibble my blankets into a perfect nest.
• PANT HOOTS : Okay, maybe I do more of a "Pant Bark" but there is no doubt about it, like chimps, when I am excited you know about it!
I am proud to call myself part chimpanzee. And it only goes to show — You Can’t Judge A Dog By Her Cover!
