Everyone says Charlie is a wonder. They comment on how handsome he is, or how big he is. They want to comment on him for superficial qualities, but he's really a hero with fur. From the moment of adoption, he has been one miracle after another for me. We adopted him in the hopes that he would succeed in becoming my service dog. He was 9 months old, and a bit shell shocked from his incarceration. Food aggression, fear of the car, fear of separation, and disinterest in toys were our first roadblocks. That was December of 2013.
Flash forward to May 2014. Charlie was riding in the back seat, happy as could be and my hands started going numb. I pulled the car over in my parents' driveway and opened the door. I eased to the ground, and terror struck me - knowing I can't get help, and fearing for my health and that Charlie may be lost to me forever if I black out. "Charlie. I need help. Charlie, help me." The last sight I had before losing consciousness was my 100lbs. Great Dane/Retriever mutt leaping through the seats and over me like Rin Tin Tin. He ended up nudging me into a sitting position and dragging me to their front door where 911 was called.
That was the moment everyone knew what he was made of.
It's been a year since that frightening day. My health needs continue to change, but Charlie takes everything in stride. When I need him, he's there for me with a concerned look, a gentle kiss and a willingness to help me navigate life independently. Our bond is something irreplaceable.
Charlie Majors is addicted to Starbucks "coffee" (whipped cream). His hobbies include watching "Quill" and "Lassie" on TV, fitting three tennis balls in his mouth, and getting snuggly cuddles on daddy's side of the bed in the early mornings. His favorite service dog tasks are getting the warm clothes out of the dryer and carrying my handbag when I'm too tired.
Charlie's love keeps me afloat. They say you're saving a dog's life when you adopt, but really he saves mine every single day.
