On an early Spring evening at church, our youth discovered a 6 week old puppy shivering under the bushes. He was so tiny that he fit inside my daughter's jacket with it zIpped up. We were the only family with a fenced in yard and no dog; so he came home with us. Murphy soon became the ruler of the house. Everything revolved around him. When he was 18 months old, we were out walking and he had to stop at every other house to rest. I knew this was not normal, so the next day we were at the vet. Doc P. gave us the bad news that his knees were bad. Murphy had surgery that week to stabilize his knee cap. After many weeks of rehab he was like a puppy again. But, not for long...his other knee gave out. Another surgery and rehab at the age of 2. All was well for a short while. He kept gaining weight no matter what we did. He soon reached 106 pounds. That's when he was diagnosed with Cushing's disease. He is now on weekly medicine for that and daily pain meds for his knees and elbows. Murphy doesn't let any of this get him down. He does his best to keep up with our Lab, Stormy. Who we inherited from our son. But, that's a whole other story. He loves playing in the backyard, chasing deer in the woods, going for walks and a good belly rub. He doesn't let old age and a run down body keep him down. It's been 11 years since that cold night and we wouldn't trade Murphy for any purebred out there!
