Pet's Story
Toots McBoots isn't just one of our fluffs, she is our miracle. She came to us at the best possible time. Our pug, Smokey, had just passed and had been my daughters companion since she was 4. Toots had been a show dog and recently retired and needed a home. My mom knew just the place. Toots had a heart full of love, but being a show dog, that isn't what life is about. Then she found us. My daughter has Asperger's, and while high functioning, she still had trouble communicating. It is not that she was non-verbal, she just had terrible social anxiety and trouble expressing herself in any way. It was a difficult barrier at home and at school. And now she was also a teenager... She was hesitant to even try to get close to Toots. The pain of losing Smokey was still raw and she didn't want to feel that pain again. But all it took was looking into those big, dark eyes filled with such expression and love and she was hooked. But the biggest surprise was what happened next. Toots became our miracle. The girl who could barely tell us what she wanted for dinner now talked non-stop about Toots and her antics. This 6 pounds of love became her little therapy dog. She suddenly blossomed as far as communicating. It was like day and night for us. And even Toots blossomed. There aren't enough hours in the day for her to spread her love and give kisses. Toots spent her days under my desk snoring like a truck driver until it was time to go pick up my daughter from school and then off we went to go pick her up. My co-pilot always so anxious for her pal to emerge from school. And no matter how bad the day may have been for my daughter at school, all she had to do was see that face peering over the steering wheel looking for her. Every time I would see her grimace turn to a grin, it made me almost cry. I don't know how she does it. I guess I don't care. I just know that we are the luckiest family in the world to have such an amazing little ball of fur who changed our lives so immensely.
