Tell voters something fun or interesting about the dog in the photo. Is this a WRS dog or rescued from another organization? If so, when was it adopted? Share something special that we could include on our calendar if your photo wins.
Skye is a former bait dog that we adopted from SOS Animal Shelter. Dog fighting is rampant in the South, unfortunately. For anyone who isn't familiar, a bait dog is a dog that is used by dog fighters to "warm up" the fight dog by letting it maul the bait dog and increase its adrenaline prior to a fight.
At the time, she was emaciated and had several injuries, but what was most broken was her spirit.
So was ours- we adopted her 3 weeks after our daughter passed away. We had no intention of adopting another dog, but her story endeared us.
She has come so far. When we first got her, she still has several open wounds to her backside (from cowering while being attacked). She wouldn't make eye contact, and would piddle anytime she heard a loud noise. Everything frightened her (rightfully so).
Here we are, 2 years later, and she is completely rehabilitated. A social butterfly, she is the first to greet people/other animals. She is very well behaved, very spoiled and very happy. And her best friend, ironically, is our rescue pit bull.
Her resilience in the face of all that she has been through has been inspirational for us and has really helped us heal.
She continues to amaze us with her intelligence, mischievousness, and beauty. She is the epitome of the Weimaraner breed.
