Like her namesake, Lusitania came with plenty of sass and a sturdy build to match. She was found in a Moxee, WA roundabout, yelling canine obscenities at compassionate motorists — louder than a ship’s horn. After losing our soul dog earlier that year, my husband and I decided to foster her — partly to help her, partly to help ourselves through the grieving process. After the first six months, we realized, “No one is going to adopt this hot mess.” So, we adopted her ourselves. Lucy was a cocktail of defense drive, anxiety, and territorial behavior — there’s a reason her trainer nicknamed her “Sassypants” and a warning label on her jacket that says, “I’m the reason for safety briefs.” After two years and a ship-ton of patience, training, and humility, she’s a recovering conspiracy theorist learning that not everyone’s out to get her… some people just want to pet her — but they still probably shouldn’t.
